Successful completion of the Hand Surgery Certifying Examination is required for board certification in surgery of the hand. The Certifying Exam is a five-hour, multiple-choice examination held once per year on a single day at computer-testing centers across the U.S. To be eligible, exam applicants must be currently certified by the ABS in general surgery, in addition to completing the required training in hand surgery.
Certification in surgery of the hand is offered in conjunction with the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. An applicant may pursue the certification process through only one certifying board.
