The Council of the American Board of Surgery (ABS) is seeking nominees to serve a six-year term beginning on July 1, 2025. The Council serves as a resource of knowledge, skill, wisdom, and expertise for the organization, and is where issues that cross specialties are discussed. The Council consists of a diverse group of surgeons across a spectrum of practice and experience, and includes approximately 30 members from across the specialties recognized by the ABS.
Council members each serve on one of the five ABS specialty boards (General Surgery Board, Vascular Surgery Board, Pediatric Surgery Board, Complex General Surgical Oncology Board, or Trauma Burns and Critical Care Board) and one or more of the five Council Committees, (Assessment Committee, Diplomates and Surgeons in Practice Committee, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, Education and Training Committee, and/or Research Committee). In addition to commitment, availability, loyalty, and ability to keep confidence, individuals with expertise in one or more of the following areas are sought:
- Outcome research methodologies
- Newer techniques in educational assessment (VBA, AI, simulation applications)
- Working with big data
- Artificial intelligence
- Certification of foreign-trained surgeons
In addition, the ABS is actively seeking surgeons with the following experience:
- Program director: Primary certification in either vascular surgery or general surgery (past or current)
- Program director: Fellowship for subspecialty training programs in pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, or complex general surgical oncology (past or current)
- Community practice surgeon
- Transplant surgery, surgical critical care, vascular surgery

The time commitment including exams is approximately 8 days in-person and an additional 8-12 virtual meetings per year for six (6) years.
Nominees will be accepted from societies, peers, or self-nomination. All nominations will require a letter of support (i.e., completion of the Nominate/Support Form) from either an organization or from an ABMS-certified physician. Both the nominator and nominee forms must be completed for the process to be considered complete.
