2026 Nominations to the Trauma, Burns and Surgical Critical Care Board of the American Board of Surgery

The Trauma, Burns, and Surgical Critical Care Board of the ABS is seeking director nominees to serve a six-year term beginning September 1, 2026.

The Trauma, Burns, and Surgical Critical Care Board (TBSCCB) of the American Board of Surgery (ABS) is seeking director nominees to serve a six-year term beginning September 1, 2026. The TBSCCB comprises approximately 12 members that represent the spectrum of critical care surgical practice, and is primarily responsible for defining appropriate content and overseeing the development and administration of examinations in surgical critical care. Accordingly, the TBSCCB is responsible for the Surgical Critical Care Certifying Examination (CE) and the Surgical Critical Care Continuous Certification Assessment (CCA).

Directors will participate in developing the various examinations, in addition to focusing on the TBSCCB’s current priorities and initiatives. The TBSCCB’s current major priority is the implementation of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) for surgical critical care.

Directors must be currently certified by the ABS in surgical critical care. The time commitment is approximately 8-10 days per year including participation in exam committees and regular in-person and virtual board meetings, in addition to the various specialty board responsibilities.

Physical attendance at the TBSCCB meeting being held September 1-2, 2026, in Philadelphia, is mandatory.

The TBSCCB utilizes a competency-based selection process to optimize its performance. Accordingly, individuals with one or more of the following competencies are sought:

  • Educational assessment experience
  • Education innovation
  • Development of certification & accreditation requirement
  • Experience with EPAs
  • Community practice
  • Burn/wound care
  • Emergency critical care

Emphasis will be placed on varied experience across all dimensions, including practice type, practice focus, geographic location, professional experience, and time in practice, among others.

Nominees will be accepted from societies, peers, or self-nomination. All nominations will require completion of the Director Nomination Form from an ABMS-certified physician and completion of the Director Application Form by the nominee.
