“Inspirational” and “desperate” are two words Gary B. Korus, MD uses to describe his time on the front lines of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic as a surgeon at PennMed in Philadelphia.
“When it seemed like the surge of very sick patients was never-ending or whenever I found myself overwhelmed or tired, I would take a look around me,” said Dr. Korus. “I was inspired daily by staff, including our medical technicians, nursing assistants, therapists, and aides, who stepped forward to care for our community.”
His experience on the front lines of this pandemic reminded Dr. Korus of the importance of communicating accurate, timely information to the public and health care professionals. “Fear of the unknown, or worse, fear based on misinformation, has made me reevaluate how we communicate and how important trust is to that communication. If we are to provide the right care at the right time for our patients, we must do a better job.”
