The Complex General Surgical Oncology (CGSOB) of the American Board of Surgery (ABS) is seeking director nominees to serve a six-year term beginning September 16, 2024. The CGSOB serves as a resource of knowledge, skill, wisdom, and expertise, and is where issues pertinent to the practice of complex surgical oncology are deliberated. It comprises approximately 15 members from across surgical oncology specialties and is responsible for both initial and continued board certification in complex general surgical oncology (CGSO) by the ABS. Accordingly, the CGSOB is responsible for the Complex General Surgical Oncology Qualifying Examination (CGSO QE), the Complex General Surgical Oncology Certifying Examination (CGSO CE) and the Complex General Surgical Oncology Continuous Certification Assessment (CGSO CCA).

Directors will participate in developing the various examinations and administering the annual oral examination (CE), in addition to focusing on the current priorities and initiatives. The time commitment is approximately 10-14 days per year including the oral examination, examination reviews, and biannual retreats, in addition to the various committee responsibilities.

The CGSOB utilizes a competency-based selection process to optimize its performance. Accordingly, in addition to commitment, availability, loyalty, and ability to keep confidence, individuals with one or both of the following competencies are sought:

  • Expertise in the development and implementation of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs)
  • Certification in Complex General Surgical Oncology

Emphasis will be placed on elements of diversity across all dimensions, including race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age or other elements that bring a different voice to the organization.

Nominees will be accepted from societies, peers, or self-nomination. All nominations require a letter of support and completion of the nomination/support form by an organization or an ABMS-certified physician. Both the nominator and nominee forms must be completed for each candidate by 4:00 p.m. ET on Monday, May 13, 2024.
