The American Board of Surgery (ABS), the national certifying body for general surgeons and related specialists, and the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS), the national certifying body for otolaryngologist – head and neck surgeons, are pleased to share the examination blueprint for the Adult Complex Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery (ACTPS) Focused Practice Designation (FPD) Examination.
In 2023 and 2024, the ABS and the ABOHNS developed the blueprint that will be used as the basis for the ACTPS FPD Exam. The blueprint was designed by an exam committee consisting of a diverse group of ABS- and ABOHNS-certified surgeons with expertise in adult complex thyroid and parathyroid surgery. Following the initial development of the blueprint draft, feedback was solicited from practicing thyroid and parathyroid surgeons as well as fellowship program directors. Informed by robust feedback obtained through this process, weights were refined to dictate how each topic area and secondary classification will be represented on the exam.
The first ACTPS FPD Exam will be held in spring 2025, with additional information forthcoming. For guidance on the content areas for this exam, interested surgeons may now review the exam blueprint here.
