Seeking Volunteers for the ABEM Disaster Medicine Certification Assessment Program

ABS diplomates certified in surgical critical care may be eligible for volunteer opportunities to contribute to the development of ABEM's disaster medicine certification assessment program.

The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) is seeking physicians interested in contributing to the development of its disaster medicine certification assessment program.

As a sponsoring board for this new subspecialty certification, the American Board of Surgery (ABS) invites surgeons certified in surgical critical care (SCC) to apply for one or both of the volunteer opportunities available. Applications will be accepted through Monday, November 16, 2026.

The ABEM is currently accepting applications for two volunteer opportunities:

Disaster Medicine Assessment Committee Members

ABEM seeks three physician members to serve on its inaugural Disaster Medicine Assessment Committee as at-large members. Committee members will contribute to the development and maintenance of the disaster medicine certification assessment, including examination blueprints, assessment items, and review of examination content and performance.

Disaster Medicine Item Writers

ABEM is also seeking 11 physicians to serve as disaster medicine item writers. Item writers play a critical role in the development of the disaster medicine certification assessment program by creating and revising examination content that reflects current practice and supports high-quality assessment of candidates.
