The American Board of Surgery (ABS) is proud to announce the recent professional accomplishments and awards of its general counsel and chief diversity equity and inclusion officer, Ms. Ada Okafor, Esq.

Ms. Okafor was named a Top 100 Under 50 Executive Leader by Diversity MBA Magazine. The 2022 class of leaders was selected from a competitive pool of several hundred nominees with advanced degrees who represent a broad spectrum of national and international companies. Ms. Okafor is listed alongside some of the most respected diverse business leaders and thought leaders in the country.

Additionally, Ms. Okafor has been selected by Corporate Counsel Women of Color (CCWC) as a 2022 Next Gen Emerging Millennial Leader. This award recognizes millennial legal professionals who stand out because of their talent, drive, and dedication in serving their community. Formed in 2004, CCWC is a not-for-profit organization of 5,000+ women attorneys of color who serve as general counsel, assistant general counsel, corporate counsel, in-house legal counsel, and other capacities for Fortune 1000 companies, Forbes 2000 companies, not-for-profit corporations, and other entities in the US and abroad. The organization’s mission is to provide a support network to in-house women of color, facilitate networking around the nation and abroad, and promote all aspects of global diversity in the legal profession and workplace.

Finally, Ms. Okafor has been nominated as one of the Philadelphia Business Journal’s 2022 Best of the Bar Awards honorees. This award honors the Philadelphia region’s most impactful lawyers, taking into consideration their demonstrated success over the past 15 months. Nominees for this award are judged on the quality of achievement during those 15 months, including the business/legal significance of the matters, the size of the result and the business impact of their work. This year’s honorees will be celebrated at an event hosted by the Philadelphia Business Journal in late October.

In addition to these achievements, Ms. Okafor recently completed a Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program with Cornell University. Given that the DEI landscape is evolving rapidly, this was an important course for her to stay up-to-date on the latest DEI theories, methodologies, principles, frameworks and best practices. She will use what she learned in the intensive program spanning several months to advance ABS’s DEI program and initiatives.

Please join us in congratulating Ms. Okafor on her well-deserved recognitions and outstanding accomplishments.

About the ABS

The American Board of Surgery is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 for the purpose of certifying individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge in the field of surgery. Surgeons certified by the ABS have completed at least five years of surgical training following medical school and successfully completed a written and oral examination process administered by the ABS. They must then maintain their board certification through ongoing learning and practice improvement activities.

The ABS offers board certification in general surgery, vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, complex general surgical oncology, surgery of the hand, and hospice and palliative medicine. It is one of the 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
